Book review: The Legend of Hobart by Heather Mullaly

Book details

I received a copy of this book from Lola, of Lola’s Blog Tours, in exchange for an honest review of the same. Disclaimer: The review below is my honest opinion of this book, after reading the book.

About the book

(From Goodreads)

Tired of being teased about his name and his stutter, twelve-year-old Hobart sets out to do a few heroic deeds and earn a place in Knight School. But the local damsels he hopes to save assure him that the last thing they need is rescuing. The runaway bull he tries to catch wears him like a hat. And don’t even ask about the ogre.

Finally, in desperation, Hobart sets out on the most daring quest he can think of–he will slay a dragon. Or that’s his plan anyway.

The Legend of Hobart is a hilarious, heart-felt adventure, for the would-be hero in all of us.

Why I picked this book

The blurb. Off late, I’ve been looking for reads that are well-written, have a good story and strong characters, but are also light reads. When I read the blurb for The Legend of Hobart, I had a feeling I should at least make an attempt to read it.

What I liked about this book

Everything. Since the beginning, it has a very Percy Jackson vibe; Hobart’s sarcasm will 100% remind you of Percy Jackson. Just like Hero will remind you of Annabeth.

This one’s such an easy and light read, it is tough to not fall in love with its characters. Be it Hobart, Tate, or Hero. My personal favorite twists are the Lord Rupert twist and the very, very positive and assertive ending. The story gives the most wonderful message in defining and setting the expectations for heroism. And the not-so-preachy narrative does justice to this beautifully well.

I’d recommend this for adults and children alike. Personally, I feel like this definition of bravery and heroism is something that the adults and children, both, need to learn. I wish I could talk more about how well this story explains the whole idea, but that would just mean giving away spoilers, and I really don’t want to do that. So, I’m just going to round up and ask you to pick this book in whatever format and on whatever medium you can get it. Snuggle up with it on your lowest days, or with your kids; however, just find the Hobart in you.

What I disliked about this book

I’m only going to dislike it if people did not read this one enough. This one deserves a whole lot of popularity and love.
